Year 1

Summer 1 - Who had the best time - Nana or me?


This half term we are exploring toys from the past and finding out who plays with them and building a chronology from the 1970s to modern day. We will be comparing toys and discussing who played with the best toys and why, learning about famous inventors along the way. We will be investigating the properties of materials toys are made from and identifying their characteristics.  We will design, make and evaluate our own moving vehicle and make fruit jelly. We will become Artists for the day and create a picture in the style of Romero Britto. We will also compare the weather between Winter and Spring, identifying differences between the two seasons. 


In English our Star Author is Mini Grey and we will be completing exciting reading and writing activities based on one of her books 'Traction Man'.



In Maths we will continue to look at place value, addition and subtraction and within continuous provision we will be learning how to tell the time to o'clock and half past. 

Spring 2 - Is it better to be hot or cold?


Welcome back after the half term break. During this half term we will be comparing the features of hot and cold countries and finding out why people choose to go on holiday to these different countries. We will be finding out about the equator and the North and South Poles. We will also be learning about the different foods animals eat and completing a mini beast study towards the end of the half term.


In English this half term we will be completing activities based on two picture books. The first book is ‘Lost and Found’ by Oliver Jeffers and the second is ‘Meerkat Mail’ by Emily Gravett who is also our author focus for this half term.

In Maths this half term we will look at counting in 2’s and 5’s and then we will move on to measurements. We will look at length and height and then move on to weight and mass.

We are very lucky to now have 'Bug Club' for children to access their level reading books. Who can earn the most rewards to play their games? Spring 1 - 'Is Home where the heart is?'


This half term we will be looking at the 4 countries which make up the United Kingdom and the seas which surround us. We will then be looking at Sutton-in-Ashfield, discussing the different types of buildings we can see. In Science we will be learning about properties of materials and discovering which materials sink or float and why. We will be using vocabulary such as 'absorbent', 'transparent', 'opaque' and many others to describe items in our school. 


In Maths we will be learning about 3D shape along with addition and subtraction number sentences. Our focus this half term will also be to develop our reasoning skills - explaining how you know the answer is correct and showing us by using concrete materials or drawing a picture. 


Our key text this half term is 'The Naughty Bus' by Jan Oke. We will learn all about what adventures the Naughty bus goes on and think about how his adventures may make other people feel. We Will also be writing a character description of the Naughty Bus and our very own adventure story!   



From Monday 1st February there will be 2 live sessions. One with Mrs Bates at 10:15am for Phonics and the English input (this will replace the pre-recorded English videos). Children will then be able to go off to complete the activity in Home Learning Packs or on paper.

Then at 12:45pm Mrs Cooper will deliver a Maths fluency session (this does NOT replace the Maths pre-recorded sessions and activity) and a Story.

Please find the new timetable with the new links for the live sessions below. There are whiteboards, pens and rubbers available to collect at the school office (1 per child please). It is much easier to see white board pen when children are holding their hard work up to us!

Reading together at home

It is still really important that you read with your child every day. 

We are sending you weekly reading books to read while the children are at home. These are in the form of ebooks and comics.

We are continuing to follow our phonics curriculum map, with lots of opportunities built in to our daily  live teaching sessions for revisiting and practising previous learning. Phonics Keyboards


These are the word mats we use to help us sound out our words when writing. Sometimes there is more than one grapheme (spelling) for one phoneme (sound). If children are unsure of a spelling, we encourage them to try the word with each grapheme to see which one they think looks right. These can also be used at home as a bit of an 'I spy' game. e.g. Can you find 'oa' for boat on your keyboard? 

These are also available for collection from the school office.

We have moved our pre-recorded videos to support the Maths learning as the file sizes are hard to upload to the website. You will now be able to find the videos on Teams. When you log in to Teams and select the All Year 1 Team you will see tabs across the top select the Year 1 Maths Tab (you may need to click more to see it) When you have clicked the tab you will see videos labelled with the date and will need to press play to view. REMINDER: All English inputs will be delivered live daily replacing pre-recorded videos. Please get in touch if you have any problems. Thank you for your continued support.
